Oyster mushrooms are typical shelf mushrooms. The business end of the species is underground, inside a tree, or otherwise not visible. Its mycelium does the work of finding food, and then produces mushrooms to spread its spores.
Their spores are released from the underside of the mushroom, from between the wavy gills. Oyster mushrooms in particular are known for having a copious amount of spores- somewhere in the millions for a single mushroom.
