Giant Kelp Ring | (Macrocystis pyrifera)

$115.00

The undulating waves of kelp blades are recreated in this sterling silver ring. The kelp "leaves" flow around the ring, rising a bit in the front and tightening towards the back for a comfortable fit. This is one of our more abstract pieces, if you didn’t know it was kelp it may just feel like the ocean.

This is our first design of a water species and we are excited to do more! We like the movement we were able to achieve with this piece.

Kelp grows from a holdfast attached to rock and the bottom of the ocean, and with no roots it absorbs nutrients directly from the water. The “bubbles” along the stem are filled with air, and help the plant stretch up vertically instead of getting thrown around by the currents. Kelp helps to shield the coastlines from turbulent waters.

Kelp Ring FAQs

  • Tarnish happens to all of us unfortunately, and this ring is no exception. It will get darker in the recesses, but we tend to like that look as well. The darkening adds depth to the piece, because the surface layers stay brighter.

You can clean this ring by scrubbing it with an old toothbrush and dishsoap, you can rub it with a polishing cloth.

  • Most people go for the ring and middle finger first, in addition this one actually looks really good on a thumb. The design stretches along the entire band, so more of the wavy goodness can be seen on a thumb or index finger.

  • Kelp leaves (called blades) grow from little bubbles of air along its stem. The air in these sacs helps pull this large, heavy organism towards the surface. (Kelp can grow higher than a 16 story building!)

Anyway, that’s what those little bumps are, its gas bladders.
